March 2010 Luncheon Talk: Intelligent Completions – Why doesn’t every well have one?

Abstract:
The first intelligent completion was installed in 1997, in the last 13 years a number of major oil companies have embraced the technology while others have stood by and watched the technology develop without deploying any completions utilizing these systems.
This presentation will introduce the basic concepts of intelligent completions and the differences between these completions when compared to standard completions. What impact these differences have on the overall design phase of the completion and the challenges facing companies in progressing from the conceptual design to implementation.
Experience of successful approaches will be presented and lessons learned from operators who routinely install intelligent completions will be discussed. While every well will not be an intelligent well, an understanding of the concepts and philosophies of design may just help to select which wells and fields should and should not be considered for investment in the technology.
